The Sitting Service is available to parents or carers of a child or young person with a disability who have been referred by a professional supporting the family; once they have completed an assessment and recognised that a Short Break may be of benefit to them and their child they will be sent an application form for completion and return to the Short Breaks Service within Portsmouth City Council.

The aim of the sitting service is to provide parents and carers of children and young people with a disability the opportunity to take a break from caring. The break may be, for example, to spend time with siblings, shopping, or an evening out. Families will be provided with a suitably recruited and trained worker who will get to know the needs of the family and provide a sitting service within the home.

Eligible families will receive an allocation of hours which can be used between the dates given upon return of the application form. Currently it equates to 1 hour per week. These hours can be banked to enable you to have sessions that vary in length – for example to provide one session of 4 – 5 hours per month.

Enable Ability has a long track record of delivering short breaks to families of children with disabilities. As a local organisation that is well known throughout the city of Portsmouth we strive to achieve high standards in all areas of service provision and, as well as being registered with the Care Quality Commission and Ofsted, Enable Ability has been ‘Investors in People’ accredited since 2000.

The Sitting Service will operate alongside our existing child befriending service by allocating suitably trained staff members to visit the family home and provide appropriate activities together with the necessary care and support for eligible children in the home environment.
